ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A park dedication ceremony on Sunday in North Asheville will honor the memory of a woman murdered at the site in May 2016.

Friends and loved ones of the late Candace Pickens will join community leaders, volunteers and other well-wishers at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at Ottari and Ira B. Jones School Road to formally dedicate Candace Pickens Memorial Park.

It’s also a celebration of countless people who pulled together to build playgrounds last October at the site, where Pickens lost her life.

As the Friends of Candace Pickens Memorial Park explain at their web site: “After five days of herculean work involving over 1,000 volunteers, five semi-trucks of mulch, miles of boards, thousands of screws, and hours of smiles, the Asheville community built a new park that generations of kids will enjoy.”
