ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — “Nope, not feeling it. Still not heading out,” a man said as he stuck his head out the door into the frigid temperatures and snow flurries in Asheville on Thursday afternoon.
The temperature was 22 degrees with a feels-like temperature of 1 — that was a little warmer than the feels-like of three below just a couple hours earlier.
If you plan to go out, bundle up. It’s only going to get colder.
The National Weather Service has issued a Cold Weather Advisory for much of Western North Carolina, where wind chills of 5 to 15 below zero are expected.
Counties under the advisory, which is in effect until 10 a.m. Friday, include: Avery, Buncombe, Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, Mitchell, Swain, Transylvania and Yancey.

Wind chills as low as 15 below zero could result in hypothermia or frostbite if precautions are not taken.
Dressing for frigid temperatures is about layering and protecting yourself from wind, moisture and heat loss. Here are some tips:
Layer up
- Base layer: Moisture-wicking fabric (like merino wool or synthetic materials) to keep sweat off your skin. Avoid cotton, which holds moisture.
- Mid layer: Insulating materials (like fleece or down) to trap heat.
- Outer layer: A windproof and waterproof jacket to shield against wind and snow.
Protect extremities
- Hat: Choose one that covers your ears; wool or fleece is best.
- Gloves/mittens: Mittens are warmer than gloves. Look for insulated, waterproof options.
- Scarf/neck gaiter/balaclava: Cover your neck and face to prevent frostbite.
- Warm socks: Wool socks (like merino) keep feet warm and dry. Consider sock liners for extra warmth.
Footwear
- Insulated boots: Waterproof and rated for sub-zero temperatures. Make sure they’re not too tight (you need room for circulation).
- Gaiters: Use them to keep snow and moisture out of your boots.
Other tips
- Layer smart: You should be able to adjust layers easily to avoid sweating too much, which can make you colder later.
- Hand and foot warmers: Disposable or rechargeable warmers are great for extra warmth.
- Hydration: Drink plenty of water; dehydration can make you feel colder.
- Avoid metal accessories: Jewelry or metal zippers touching your skin can get painfully cold.
- If you wear glasses, use anti-fog solutions or a face mask designed to minimize fogging.
