FAIRVIEW, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A new four-legged team member is bringing healing and hope to the Fairview Volunteer Fire Department, months after the department endured back-to-back tragedies and the devastating impact of Tropical Storm Helene.

Grace, a young therapy dog trained to provide emotional support, arrived this week thanks to a donation from the K9 Responder Foundation. The black Labrador mix was welcomed with open arms by the department’s staff, who said her presence couldn’t have come at a better time.

“She is young and still learning but she literally hit the ground running,” the department said in a statement. “Our crew on duty was very happy to finally meet her, knowing she will be here for us.”

Grace’s arrival follows a difficult chapter in Fairview’s history. In the aftermath of Helene, the department lost Battalion Chief Tony Garrison, who died in the line of duty while performing a rescue. Just months later, in February 2025, Battalion Chief Steven Lytle died in a tractor accident. Two stations were also flooded and sustained significant damage during the storm, placing additional strain on the department’s firefighters and staff.

In recognition of those hardships, the K9 Responder Foundation reached out with an offer to donate a therapy dog in honor of Garrison. The organization, along with support from donors and the K9 Responder Academy, made it possible for Grace to complete specialized training before joining the department.

While she’s still settling into her new surroundings, the department said Grace will soon play a vital role not only in supporting staff but also in community outreach. Plans include having her attend public relations events and visit other emergency agencies in the region.

“With the devastation that our staff endured and worked through during the hurricane, the emotional support that Grace will provide our staff is immeasurable,” the department said.

The department expressed deep gratitude to the K9 Responder Foundation, trainer Rick Dunton and the many donors who helped bring Grace to Fairview.
