ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Poll workers are the “backbone” of the democratic process, election officials said in announcing information sessions for those interested in working the polls.

Buncombe County Election Services is looking for people who might want to earn a little extra money while supporting the voting process for the upcoming General Election.

In-person information sessions have been set to give people the opportunity to learn more about the perks of working the polls, eligibility requirements, time commitment, pay rates and more. The information sessions are optional and not required to become a poll worker.

Upcoming sessions:

  • Noon Wednesday, July 17, at the Election Services Office, 59 Woodfin Place, Asheville
  • Noon Thursday, Aug. 15, at the Election Services Office, 59 Woodfin Place, Asheville

Representation from the Democrat and Republican parties is an important part of the process and is statutorily required. While the Constitution Party and other parties are now recognized by the state, representation is statutorily required only for the two parties with the largest memberships, a news release from Buncombe County Election Services said.

“Our poll workers are the backbone of safe and fair elections,” Election Services Director Corinne Duncan said in the release. “Without them, we wouldn’t be able to offer our Buncombe County voters the best experience at the polls, regardless of if they vote early or on Election Day.”
