ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Have you ever wanted to make a difference or thought the city could benefit from your knowledge and experience?

If so, now’s your chance to provide input on the policies that shape Asheville and its government. The city of Asheville has openings on several boards and is looking for local residents to fill the vacancies.

More than 30 boards and commissions advise the mayor and city council on various issues, including housing, development, air quality and historic resources, city officials said in a news release.

Board members and commissioners generally serve as unpaid volunteers, according to the city’s website.

“Being on a board or commission requires a significant personal commitment, so applicants should consider their ability to commit their time and personal energy before applying,” the website said.

Current and upcoming board and commission vacancies include:

  • Planning and Zoning Commission (application deadline Aug. 5 and consideration of these appointments is scheduled for the Sept. 10, 2024, city council meeting)
  • Housing Authority of the City of Asheville (application deadline Aug. 5)
  • African American Heritage Commission (application deadline Sept. 1)
  • Air Quality Agency Board (application deadline Sept. 1)
  • Alcoholic Beverage Control Board (application deadline Sept. 1)
  • Historic Resources Commission (application deadline Sept. 1)
  • Human Relations Commission (application deadline Sept. 1)
  • Noise Advisory Board (application deadline Sept. 1)
  • Riverfront Commission (application deadline Sept. 1)
  • Urban Forestry Commission (application deadline Sept. 1)
