ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Highland Brewing Company is celebrating the Lunar New Year this weekend with a different kind of glowing circle in the sky.
The Year of the Wooden Snake disc golf tournament will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1 at the Highland Brewing Disc Golf Course, 12 Old Charlotte Hwy, Asheville.
“It’s a nighttime glow-disc disc golf tournament for the Lunar New Year,” said assistant Highland taproom manager Adam Jones. “We have glow-discs for the Year of the Wood Snake here. We are gonna have UV lights to charge them. We’ll have a little LED kind of halo light on each basket. So, yes, it will be dark, but you will be able to see your disc and you’ll be able to see your target, the basket.”

Glow-disc is a common game at Highland for many players, but the Lunar New Year tournament will feature something special: Highland Brewing glow-discs with a Year of the Wood Snake design on them.
“Everyone playing will have at least one glow-disc,” Jones said.
There are a couple of different prizes to win at the tournament:
- For the first place winner of the traditional nine-hole disc golf course, a $50 Highland gift card and a special Lunar New Year beer
- For second place, a $25 Highland gift card and a special Lunar New Year beer
- For third place, a $20 Highland gift card
- The first person to “ace,” or score a hole-in-one, for holes one, seven or eight, will win a $25 Highland gift card and a special Lunar New Year beer
The special beer is this year’s product of a long-standing collaboration between Highland and another brewing company, Lucky Envelope.
“It is a collaboration brew with Lucky Envelope, which is a Chinese-owned brewery out of Seattle. This year is a honey amber,” Jones said. “They are 375 milliliter bottles, so, like, pint bottles hand-bottled from the pilot team.”
Interested players can sign up for the tournament online at www.discgolfscene.com or day-of at Highland until the tournament begins at 6 p.m. The registration fee is $35.
“We have plenty of the discs on hand,” Jones said. “It should be fun!”
