ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Another overnight traffic shift is coming Monday to Interstate 26 in Buncombe County.

Plans are for drivers on a stretch of I-26 West to be cruising on smooth concrete come Tuesday morning.

A North Carolina Department of Transportation contractor plans to close I-26 West from 8 p.m. Monday until 6 a.m. Tuesday between U.S. 25 (Exit 44) and Long Shoals Road (Exit 37). During the closure, crews will shift traffic from new outside lanes to new concrete that has been milled through a diamond-grinding process, a news release from the NCDOT said.

The overnight detour will direct traffic to U.S. 25 North (Hendersonville Road) then Long Shoals Road.

The operation is part of the I-26 widening projects in Buncombe and Henderson counties. Shifting traffic to the inside lanes will allow crews from Fluor-United to begin diamond-grinding the outside lanes and complete outstanding operations on the outside lanes and shoulder.
