ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A major interstate rehabilitation project disrupted by Tropical Storm Helene is back on track.

Crews are scheduled to close Interstate 40 West from Hendersonville Road (Exit 50) to I-26 beginning at 8 p.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Monday. The closure will allow for rehabilitation work on the westbound bridge over the French Broad River.

The primary detour will route traffic onto I-240 West starting at Exit 53B. Digital signs will direct motorists to use the I-240 West detour. The Brevard Road onramp to I-40 West will also be closed, with traffic diverted to the same detour route.

This weekend’s work includes hydro-demolition of the existing bridge deck and the application of a latex-modified concrete overlay to create a new riding surface. New asphalt will also be installed on the bridge approaches before the section reopens Monday morning.

The $27.9 million rehabilitation project includes road resurfacing and bridge deck overlays. The work also addresses spalling concrete on substructure components, including piers, and aims to improve driving conditions on four bridges over Hominy Creek and two over the French Broad River. Completion is scheduled for spring 2026.
