ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — July is National Grilling Month, and as backyard barbecues heat up across Western North Carolina, local fire officials are reminding residents to keep safety in mind while enjoying the smoky flavors of summer.
The Asheville Fire Department has released a list of safety recommendations to help ensure cookouts stay fun and fire-free.
For propane grills, officials advise checking gas tanks for leaks before lighting up. Grills should always be kept clean by removing grease or fat buildup from grates and trays below. It’s also important to position grills well away from homes, deck railings and overhanging branches.
“Always ensure your gas grill lid is open before lighting the grill,” the department posted on social media. “And never leave your grill unattended.”
Charcoal users are urged to avoid adding lighter fluid or other flammable liquids to the fire once it’s lit. After grilling, coals should be allowed to cool completely before disposal in a metal container.
Grilling isn’t just about safety — it’s also about mastering the craft. Experts suggest the following tips to enhance your grilling game:
- Preheat your grill for 10-15 minutes to ensure even cooking and prevent food from sticking.
- Clean the grates before and after each use to reduce flare-ups and preserve flavor.
- Flip meat only once to develop a proper sear and retain moisture.
- Use a meat thermometer to ensure safe internal temperatures: 165°F for poultry, 145°F for pork and fish and 160°F for ground beef.
- Let meat rest before serving to lock in juices.
- Grill vegetables and fruits like zucchini, corn, mushrooms or peaches for a smoky twist on summer sides.
Whether you’re cooking for a crowd or just tossing a few kabobs on the grill, officials say the key to a successful cookout is combining safety with flavor.
“Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grilling area,” the department added.
And always grill responsibly.
With summer in full swing, July is the perfect time to embrace outdoor cooking and share meals with family and friends.
