ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — North Carolina drivers with a love for dinosaurs will soon be able to show their support for science on the road.

A specialty license plate featuring the skeleton of Acrocanthosaurus — nicknamed the “Terror of the South” — has received more than 500 orders, according to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. That clears the threshold required by the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles to begin printing the new plate.

The Acrocanthosaurus is one of the museum’s most iconic specimens and a centerpiece of its dinosaur collection.

Each specialty plate costs $30, with $20 benefiting the Friends of the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences, a nonprofit that supports the museum’s educational programs, exhibits, research and conservation efforts. Personalized versions are available for an additional fee.

“From all of us at the Museum: thank you for driving science forward,” the museum said in a social media post.

Anyone who wants to get in on the fun and order a dinosaur plate of their own will be able to do so on the DMV website after the initial 500 plates are processed and mailed.
