ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828neewsNOW) — The executive director of a Western North Carolina economic justice nonprofit announced plans to step down later this year after more than a decade in the role.
Vicki Meath, who has led Just Economics of WNC for 16 years, said in a statement she will transition out of her position later this year, though a specific timeline has not been set.
“Leading this small but mighty organization has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” Meath said, expressing gratitude for staff, board members, volunteers and community partners.
Meath said she believes the timing is right for her and the organization, citing confidence in the group’s leadership and its continued work in grassroots organizing and advocacy.
The nonprofit said it has begun a transition process with support from consultants to ensure continuity but has not yet announced a successor.
Just Economics works to promote a just and sustainable local economy across Western North Carolina through education, advocacy and community organizing. The group is known for operating what it describes as the nation’s largest voluntary living wage certification program, recognizing employers who meet established wage standards and criteria.
The organization traces its roots to the Asheville-Buncombe Living Wage Campaign, which began in 2000 and led to the adoption of a living wage ordinance for city employees. Just Economics became the campaign’s organizational home in 2007 and has since expanded its focus to include issues such as public transit, affordable housing and worker rights.
The nonprofit operates across multiple counties and participates in statewide coalitions addressing economic justice issues. Its work includes policy advocacy, a living wage employer certification program and grassroots education and engagement efforts.
Just Economics is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit funded through private donations, business and organizational support, grants and fee-for-service programs.
