ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Rental property owners whose buildings were damaged by Tropical Storm Helene may now apply for assistance through the Renew NC Small Rental Rehabilitation Program, state officials said.

The program is designed to help eligible landlords repair, reconstruct or replace small rental properties that sustained unrepaired damage during the storm on Sept. 27, 2024.

To qualify, properties must have one to four rental units, be located in a HUD- or state-designated Most Impacted and Distressed county and have been damaged by Helene. Units must be vacant at the time of application, and applicants may not evict tenants to become eligible.

Applicants must have owned the property at the time of the storm and continue to own it, which will be given priority consideration. Property taxes must be current or on an approved payment plan and all loan obligations, including mortgages, must be up to date.

Property owners who receive assistance must agree to lease the repaired units to income-eligible households at restricted rents for 10 years.

Applications are available online at RenewNC.org. More information is available by calling 1-888-791-0207 or by visiting a local Renew NC center, listed at RenewNC.org/contact.
