ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Light snow is possible across Western North Carolina late Wednesday into Thursday, though accumulations are expected to be minimal, according to the National Weather Service office in Greenville-Spartanburg.
Forecasters said rain will be likely Wednesday afternoon, with precipitation potentially mixing with or changing to snow overnight as temperatures fall. Any snow accumulation is expected to be spotty and light, but even minor amounts could create isolated slick spots on roads.
Snow shower chances are expected to increase along the Tennessee border Friday afternoon and evening after a cold front moves through the region. While confidence remains low on snowfall totals, officials say travel impacts are possible Friday night, particularly in higher elevations. Gusty winds are also expected across the North Carolina mountains.
The weather service said temperatures will return to seasonal averages through the weekend and are expected to climb above normal early next week.
The detailed forecast for Asheville calls for rain likely Wednesday afternoon, with a high near 50 degrees. Overnight, there is a chance of rain and snow before midnight, followed by a slight chance of snow into the early morning hours, with lows around 25 degrees and little or no accumulation expected. Thursday is expected to be mostly cloudy, becoming sunny, with a high near 38. Friday is forecast to be mostly sunny with highs near 50 and wind gusts up to 25 mph.
