ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The Mountaineer Inn, known for its iconic neon sign, could reopen as soon as this summer.

Originally known as The Mountaineer Court, it began as a 19-unit motel in 1939. The Asheville landmark on Tunnel Road sold for $6.1 million in 2023, prompting many to wonder about its future.

Chris Moutos purchased the property in 1964. In May 2023, the Moutos family sold the inn to LOGE Camps, a North Bend, Washington-based company focused on outdoor-inspired lodging experiences. The company announced plans to modernize the facilities while preserving the inn’s historic character, including the iconic neon sign.

But the work appeared to have stalled.

LOGE now has a webpage that says the opening is coming this summer.

Amenities to include:

  • Bar & café
  • Outdoor fire-pits and community spaces
  • Meeting & events space
  • Pool & wellness amenities
  • Summer & winter gear demos
  • Live music

“Oh, Asheville… are you outdoor perfection? Sure seems that way. LOGE’s first location in the south couldn’t be situated in a more exciting spot for people who love being outdoors. There are almost too many options for outdoor activities and way more fun to be had in town than most people can manage. Tucked in the Blue Mountains, you’ve got thousands upon thousands of miles of trails for hiking, some incredible mountain biking, and running trails. The rivers, waterfalls, and streams are abundant for fishing, floating, running rapids, or just soaking up the good energy that is nature. If climbing and bouldering is your kind of adventure there’s no shortage of great crags and ascents to be had. For a bit of a slower adventure, bird and elk-watching are a draw. Like we said, Asheville is pretty darn incredible for getting out. We’re excited to become part of the community.” — the LOGE website
