HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — As expected, the Hendersonville City Council on Thursday appointed Melinda Lowrance, president of the local NAACP chapter, to fill a recently vacated seat on the council.

After a unanimous council vote, Lowrance took the oath of office to take the seat recently vacated by Debbie O’Neal Roundtree, who resigned last month.

In a statement released by the city, Lowrance thanked her new council colleagues “and all the citizens of Hendersonville who entrusted me with this duty. I will perform to the best of my ability and expect great things out of the City Council now that I’m on board.”

Lowrance has a long record of community involvement. She has served on the Hendersonville Board of Adjustment since 1998. She was one of the initial members of the city’s Diversity & Inclusion Advisory Committee and is vice-chair of the Henderson County Social Services Board.

She is president of the Henderson County chapter of the NAACP, which under her leadership has partnered with the Henderson County Education Foundation’s “Grow Our Own Educators” scholarship program to give students of color increased opportunities to pursue teaching careers, the city said in a release.

For 35 years, Lowrance has owned and operated Mop Head Cleaning Service.

She also is a Life Member of the Star Lite Chapter #510 Order of the Eastern Star, and is the Pastor Steward and Chairwoman of the Trustee Board for St. Paul Tabernacle A.M.E. Zion Church. She also is President of the Hendersonville District Lay Council and First Vice President of the Blue Ridge Conference Lay Council.

In addition, Lowrance is a member of the Rotary E-Club of Global Trekkers and the League of Women Voters.
