ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) —
A who was wanted for assault now is accused of assaulting officers who were trying to take him into custody Sunday, Asheville police said in a news release.
Officers patrolling the area of Hanover Street saw a vehicle with fake tags, the news release said. Upon making contact with the occupants, officers identified Xavier Jerome Avery, 25, who was wanted on an open warrant for assault.
“While being taken into custody, Avery violently assaulted multiple officers, injuring one,” the news release said.
Police said Avery was found to have fentanyl, crack cocaine and a stolen firearm during the arrest.

Avery was charged with the following:
- Possession of a firearm by a felon
- Possession of a stolen firearm
- Two counts of possession with intent to manufacture/sell/deliver Schedule II
- Felony resist, delay, obstruct
- Felony serious injury on a government official
- Three counts of assault on a government official
- Resist, delay, obstruct
- Carrying concealed gun
- Possession of drug paraphernalia
- Failure to appear on assault
According to police, officers seized a Glock 43x, which had been reported stolen, 5.1 grams of crack cocaine and 1.68 grams of fentanyl.
Avery is currently being held at the Buncombe County Detention Facility under a $81,000 secured bond.
