A suspect has been charged in connection with an alleged assault on a pedestrian Feb. 29 in West Asheville.

The incident was reported Feb. 29, when a pedestrian crossing Haywood Road near Craven Street tapped on the hood of a stopped vehicle. According to police, a passenger emerged from the vehicle, pushed the pedestrian to the ground and then got back into the vehicle and fled the scene.

Police say the victim sustained severe head trauma and was transported to Mission Hospital for treatment.

Following an investigation, detectives identified the suspect as Tyler Coenraads, 24. He was charged with Assault Inflicting Serious Bodily Injury.

According to a release, Coenraads turned himself into the Buncombe County Detention Facility on March 8 and was booked under a $5,000 (or $500 to a bondsman) secured bond issued by the magistrate. He since has been released awaiting further court proceedings.
