ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A 5k event in Asheville is shining a spotlight on a serious issue while trying to normalize conversation around the topic.
September is Suicide Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness around the urgent crisis and find resources for anyone struggling with suicidal thoughts.
In Asheville, All Souls Counseling Center (ASCC) is holding their second annual Mental Health Matters Walk/Run for Awareness on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2024, at UNC Asheville. The untimed 5k race will begin at 10 a.m. at the Karl Straus Track and wind across the wooded and hilly 3.1-mile campus course. Check-in opens at 9 a.m., the walk/run begins at 10 a.m., and the morning’s activities conclude at noon.
The family-friendly 5k aims to “end the stigma around seeking support for mental health issues,” according to a news release. The event will also feature a resource fair with representatives from many wellness and mental health organizations in Western North Carolina.
“We must encourage and normalize conversations around mental health and end the stigma about needing or receiving therapy,” said ASCC Executive Director Meredith Switzer in a press release. “Our goal in 2024 is to increase awareness among younger adults about mental wellness, support, and resources. Hosting Mental Health Matters and partnering with UNC-Asheville for a second year is a terrific way to do that. We are truly fortunate to have UNCA athlete Mental Health Ambassadors bring their voices, energy, and vital perspectives to our walk/run planning committee.”
The cost to walk or run is $20 per person, however free to participants ages 22 and under. T-shirts will be provided for the first 400 participants. The walk/run and resource fair are designed to proceed, rain or shine. All funds raised will support the work of ASCC.
