ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The music of Neal Francis is nothing short of a psychedelic dance through time.
The 36-year-old Chicago-based keyboardist and songwriter carried the audience through his third studio album, “Return to Zero,” with funky arrangements and groovy melodies at an Orange Peel show last night.
The concert, held at 8 p.m., Thursday, April 3 at the downtown Asheville venue, followed an interview Francis gave with 98.1 FM The River earlier that afternoon.
The artist gave an insight into his creative process for the new album.
“It feels like we’re starting from scratch,” Francis said, recounting the dynamic nature of “Return to Zero.”
Neal highlighted his love of multi-faceted dance music, disco and glam rock, all of which are present in his new music.
“It’s a very eclectic mix of influences,” Francis said. “If I’m being honest, there wasn’t a cohesive plan.”
Francis produced the string and instrumental arrangements on “Return to Zero” with the support of friend and composer, Dominic Frigo.
“My friend Dom Frigo helped me transcribe everything for all of our players,” Francis said.
Francis explained his appreciation for bands like Electric Light Orchestra as he rehashed the influence their songs have had on his life.
“I grew up listening to all those songs on roadtrips,” Francis shared. “Jeff Lynn is a big influence.”
Neal Francis aims to inspire a sense of ease, enjoyment and groove throughout “Return to Zero.”
“People’s interests are so fleeting that sometimes instrumentals distract,” Francis said. “You really have to kick down the door.”
