ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Following President Joe Biden’s announcement that he will no longer be seeking reelection in the 2024 presidential race, throwing his support behind Vice President Kamala Harris for the job, leaders across the country began reacting immediately.
Here are some reactions from state and local representatives across North Carolina:
Governor Roy Cooper (Democrat)
North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper wrote on Facebook, in part: “I’m deeply grateful to call President Joe Biden my friend, and I thank him from the bottom of my heart.”
Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson (Republican)
North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson took to social media, writing: “If Biden can’t run, he can’t serve. Democrats who like to talk about “protecting democracy” are throwing out the will of their voters because of bad polling. But make no mistake, whether it is Biden or Harris, the horrible policies are the same: Open borders, rampant inflation, and rising crime.
While the Democrat party is imploding, Republicans in North Carolina and across the nation are united behind President Trump to deliver for the American people to make our communities safer, life more affordable, and create opportunities for everyone.”
Attorney General Josh Stein (Democrat)
North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein tweeted: “President Biden has put the American people first throughout his historic career — as senator, vice president, and president.
His vast record of accomplishments include the Violence Against Women Act, historic expansion of health care access, record-breaking job growth across the country and in North Carolina, bipartisan infrastructure investments that will strengthen our economy for years to come, and the most consequential clean energy legislation in history.
President Biden is a true patriot. His decision today exemplifies his commitment to always putting the country before himself. I thank him for his remarkable service to our nation.”
U.S. Senator Thom Tillis (Republican)
In a post on X, Sen. Thom Tillis wrote: “If President Biden can’t handle the rigors of a campaign, then he can’t handle the rigors of the hardest job in the world for another six months. And America can’t handle the disastrous Biden-Harris agenda for another four years.”
U.S. Senator Ted Budd (Republican)
In a post on X, Sen. Ted Budd wrote: “The Democrat Party tried and failed to cover up President Biden’s cognitive decline. But they cannot cover up the record high inflation, open borders, and international chaos created by Joe Biden and Kamala Harris… No matter the candidate, the American people must reject the radical progressive worldview that is now systemic in the Democrat Party.”
U.S. Representative Chuck Edwards (Republican, 11th Congressional District)
Congressman Chuck Edwards took to social media, writing: “Joe Biden hasn’t really been in this presidential race since Donald Trump announced, and I’m not surprised to now hear him make it official. Americans are suffering under the inflation Biden has created, his open border policies, and his overreaching regulatory schemes. Kamala Harris also owns those failures, so I predict a decisive victory in November for Donald Trump.”
N.C. Representative Caleb Rudow (Democrat)
State Rep. Caleb Rudow, who is running for a seat in North Carolina’s 11th Congressional District, said, in part, on social media: “I’m grateful for Biden for his service to this country and for the future of America, and I support his endorsement of Kamala Harris.”
