ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The NCDOT is making headway on the hundreds of closed roads almost a month after Tropical Storm Helene ravaged the area.

According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation website, some 1,275 closures have been reported since the beginning of the storm. The website showed Monday that 793 of those roadways had reopened, including sections of Interstate 40 near Old Fort and downtown Asheville, as well as I-26 in Henderson and Polk counties.

“However, challenges remain, with many road closures still in effect. NCDOT staff are nearing completion of preliminary damage assessments to inform ongoing recovery efforts,” a statement from the NCDOT said.

The NCDOT website showed 482 roads still closed, 103 partially closed and 25 with truck restrictions. Of the closed roads, 73 are primary routes and 401 are secondary roads. Of the partially closed roads, 23 are primary and 80 are secondary routes.
