ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Next week, Western North Carolina residents will remember the nearly 3,000 people killed during the September 11 attacks. Several ceremonies are being held across the mountains to honor those taken too soon.
Asheville
The city of Asheville will be holding a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony on Wednesday, Sept. 11, starting at 8:30 a.m. at the Municipal Building, located at 100 Court Plaza.
“This event is to pay solemn tribute to those who heroically sacrificed their own lives to save thousands of others, and to remember those who lost their lives in the tragic events of that day,” a release from the city says.
This ceremony is open to the public. Speakers for the event include Deputy Fire Chief Chris Budzinski, City Manager Debra Campbell and Police Chief Mike Lamb.
Weaverville
The town of Weaverville invites community members to join in on a moment of silence on Wednesday, Sept. 11, starting at 8:46 a.m. at the Weaverville Community Center Patio Flagpole overlooking Lake Louise. All are welcome as the ceremony honors the victims of the September 11 attacks, fire departments, law enforcement, first responders and military personnel.
The ceremony will take place at the Dottie Sherrill Community Center, located at 60 Lakeshore Drive. Parking is available behind and below the Community Center.
Hendersonville
The city of Hendersonville will be holding a First Responder Recognition Day – 9/11 Service on Wednesday, Sept. 11 from 9 – 10 a.m.
This event is to recognize the service and sacrifice of first responders.
Clyde
Haywood County leaders will be holding their annual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony at the Clyde Fire Department on Wednesday, Sept. 11. The ceremony will start at 6 p.m. at the department located at 8531 Carolina Boulevard in Clyde.
The ceremony will remember firefighters who sacrificed their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.
