ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — As the air gets colder and the days get shorter, it can be harder to find the time and motivation to exercise. Undeterred, Western North Carolina has 5ks for days.
There are three Halloween-themed races going on in the mountain region:
- Goblin Gallop for Recovery 5k, 6 p.m., Friday, Oct. 25, 1001 Burkemont Ave., Morganton, N.C.
- The Flight of the Vampire 5k and Fun Run, 9 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 26, 390 Railroad Ave., Brevard, N.C.
- Wicked Spooky 5k, originally scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 26, but rescheduled to 9 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 7, Asheville, N.C.
The ghoulish competitions are each intended to generate money for a chosen cause. The Goblin Gallop for Recovery, for instance, is organized by Burke Recovery, a substance abuse treatment and recovery center based in Burke County.
The Goblin Gallop is unique among the three races in that it takes place at night. In an appropriately spooky twist, participants are given a glow stick and encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes. In addition to the usual prizes given out to top finishers, the Goblin Gallop will also be holding a costume contest.
The Flight of the Vampire race may not feature a costume contest, but proceeds from the sanguinary sprint will go towards the construction of a youth center in Rosman, N.C., according to the Brevard Rotary Club.
The Wicked Spooky 5k is normally one of six races in the Chasing Pints Running Series, a brewery-centric competition held in Asheville. However, the destruction from Hurricane Helene forced the Halloween race into a delay.
“We didn’t have a choice in the decision,” said Leslie Grotenhuis, Kick It Event Management owner and organizer of the Wicked Spooky race. “The city of Asheville cancelled all special event permits that had been issued starting with the 27th of September all the way through the end of November.”
The city allowed the race to be postponed. Wicked Spooky’s new date is Dec. 7 and it’s keeping its haunted flair, Grotenhuis said.
“What we’re leaning into is ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas,'” Grotenhuis laughed. “We’re still keeping the Halloween theme and the costume prizes and all of that.”
In the meantime, the five-kilometer race route can be studied here. Registration for the new date is available on the Kick It website.
