ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — An overturned vehicle is causing major traffic disruptions on Interstate 40 in Asheville, with emergency crews responding and multiple lanes closed Friday afternoon.

The Asheville Fire Department is urging drivers to avoid the area near mile marker 53, where firefighters and other first responders are working the crash. Officials said traffic is expected to be impacted for an extended period.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation reported that the two left lanes on Interstate 40 East are closed past Exit 53B in Buncombe County because of the crash. The incident was updated at 12:48 p.m., and lane closures began around 12:51 p.m.

Motorists are advised to use alternate routes if possible, remain alert and follow directions from emergency personnel while traveling through the area.

Officials have not released information on what caused the crash or whether anyone was injured. Emergency crews remained on scene Friday afternoon.
