ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Unique barns are one of the most famous elements of the Western North Carolina pastoral landscape. This weekend, those barns will be featured in an art show gala benefitting 11 local artists from the region.

The Appalachian Barn Alliance will hold their 5th annual art show gala, “A Pastoral Palette,” at 5:30 p.m., Friday, May 30 at the A-B Tech Ivy Building, 10 Genevieve Circle.

Tickets for the gala, which will feature finger foods and beverages, live music by Madison County musician David Hughes and opportunities to meet all 11 artists, cost $50 and can be purchased here.

From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, the space will open up freely to the public for an additional chance to greet a few of the artists and purchase their work.

The ABA is a historical preservation society dedicated to cataloguing the barns of WNC, particularly in Madison County. Their latest project involves an effort to purchase land outside of Mars Hill, the Smith Heritage Farmstead, which houses several historic barns.

A painting by Mark Henry which will be available at the Appalachian Barn Alliance gala.

Proceeds from each painting sold will be split 50/50 between the artist and the ABA, who will use their share to fund the Smith Heritage Farmstead acquisition.

“Our pitch this year is that we’re trying to help the artists recover, too, just like barns,” said Sandy Stevenson, president of the ABA board.

The gala was produced in collaboration with The Saints of Paint Asheville, an artist collective which partners with area nonprofits to craft mutually beneficial events.

“They do these benefits to help both themselves and sell their art, and help nonprofits who have a similar feeling about preserving heritage through any way, painting or ecological or anything like that,” Stevenson explained.

John MacKah, the head of The Saints of Paint, will be one of the 11 artists participating in the gala, joining:

  • Cecil Bothwell
  • Caleb Clark
  • Mark Harmon
  • Mark Henry
  • Dana Irwin
  • Ruthanne Kah
  • Greg Kintz
  • Andrew Mastriani
