Dogs will get star treatment but humans can have fun, too, at the upcoming Dog Day Afternoon event from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, at Lake Julian Park in Arden.
The twice-annual event is a place for dogs to meet, introduce their families to one another, show off their favorite tricks, compete in a four-legged fashion show and sample foods from vendors like Woof Street Bistro and Frozen Monkey natural shaved ice.
Past events have drawn more than 200 (leashed) dogs and hundreds more people, said event coordinator Carrie Griffin of Asheville Media Group.
“If you have a dog, bring them out, meet some dog-related sponsors and let them hang out with other dogs,” Griffin said.
Meanwhile, people can get to know some adoptable dogs that still are looking for their “forever homes.” Asheville Humane Society, Mountain Pet Rescue, Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, Sarge’s Animal Rescue, Foothills Humane Society and Rusty’s Legacy all will be present.
The event is presented by Ingles, with additional sponsors including Central Bark, Harry’s on the Hill and Hollywood Feed.
Ultimate Air Dogs will lead a high-energy “dock jumping” event, as dogs get to show off their skills retrieving items thrown into the water. “Some of these dogs are so good at it,” Griffin said.
There also will be a pet-owner look-alike contest, and contests for smallest dog, biggest dog, best dog trick and best dressed dog.
All dogs must be on a leash and are asked to be both dog-friendly and people-friendly. In the past, the crowd has included dogs of all sizes, from Chihuahuas to Great Danes.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for a local community event, to meet others who are dog lovers and meet dogs who need a forever home,” Griffin said.
Her favorite part? “Honestly, it’s (seeing) the kids that bring their family pets. They’re so proud of showing off their dog… They’ve got the best trick and they’re proud to show it off. It’s pretty wild how high some of these dogs can jump.”
Music will be provided by media sponsors Mix 96.5, 98.1 The River and 105.9 The Mountain.
Sponsor booths still are available by contacting Dawn Creasman, dcreasman@avlradio.com, or by calling 828-210-8540.
