BAT CAVE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — So far this month, almost 5 inches of rain has been recorded at Asheville Regional Airport — about 3 inches more than normal for that time span, according to the National Weather Service. Much of that fell in the past few days.
Along with the rain came landslides. On Monday, a landslide accompanied by large trees and boulders blocked U.S. 74 at Hummingbird Hill Road in the Bat Cave area.
Wilmington Response, a charitable organization that works with volunteers focused on disaster relief efforts, said Tuesday it had received reports that the mudslide has been cleared.
“However, numerous areas across Western North Carolina are still experiencing flooding and other weather-related issues,” the nonprofit said in a Facebook post. “We’re monitoring the situation closely and stand ready to support however we can as more information becomes available.”
One Bat Cave resident said in a Facebook post that about 8.5 inches of rain fell over two days at her home.
Reports also indicated primitive roads on Middle Fork were washed out in places and slides and downed trees blocked roads. Those have been cleared, according to Facebook posts.
Local excavator Jake Jarvis said in a Facebook post Tuesday his crews had spent the day dealing with flooding and landslides.
More rain is in the forecast. According to the National Weather Service, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop across the area Wednesday afternoon into the evening. A severe thunderstorm or two cannot be ruled out, with large hail and damaging winds as potential threats.
