ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Asheville City Council members are set to decide Tuesday whether to allow the Community Reparations Commission to continue its work.

The commission held its last regularly scheduled meeting on June 10, but members held a special meeting on July 15 to put the finishing touches on a request for a six-month extension.

The commission approved dozens of recommendations during its time and has requested an extension to finish its work.

Commission members said there is more community engagement around reparations education to be done, a Black chamber of commerce and accountability council need to be created and a final report needs to be finished.

“With the extension of six months, we the CRC believe these items and the full charge of the CRC will be completed to the best of our abilities,” county documents said.
