BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The Black Mountain Police Department is warning residents to beware of scam text messages falsely claiming to be from state agencies regarding traffic tickets or toll fines.

Police said North Carolina does not notify drivers of traffic violations or fines via text or email. Residents who receive such messages are urged not to reply and to block the number immediately.

“Responding to these messages confirms your number is active and can lead to more scam attempts,” the department said in a statement.

Officials emphasized several key points:

  • The state will not send text messages requesting payment for fines.
  • There is no such regulation as “NC State Admin Code 15C-16.003.”
  • The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles does not issue traffic fines.

If a driver fails to appear in court, a warrant may be issued, but no text message will be sent. Instead, the individual may be arrested during a routine traffic stop.

The court may also suspend a driver’s license for failing to appear.

Police urged the public to stay cautious and to contact their office or a trusted source if unsure. The Black Mountain Police Department can be reached at 828-419-9350.
