ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The National Weather Service has issued a flurry of advisories as a cold front takes aim at Western North Carolina.
Light snow showers are possible Friday, mainly in the higher elevations near the Tennessee border, according to the National Weather Service. Gusty northwest winds up to 40 mph will be likely from late afternoon through the overnight Friday night. The National Weather Service said wind chill values may fall below zero Friday night through early Saturday morning. Another round of wintry precipitation is possible late Sunday into Monday, with the potential for light ice accumulations.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until midnight Friday for Mitchell and Yancey counties, where up to 3 inches of snow is expected above 3,500 feet. Wind gusts as high as 50 mph are also expected.
The National Weather Service warned that snow-covered roads and scattered power outages could impact the Friday evening commute.
A Wind Advisory is in effect until 7 a.m. Saturday for parts of Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Caldwell, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, McDowell Mountains, Mitchell, Rutherford Mountains, Transylvania and Yancey counties.
Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result, the National Weather Service said.
The combination of strong winds and cold temperatures will result in wind chill values of 0 to -7 in elevations above ,3500 feet Saturday morning, the National Weather Service said. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles. Use extra caution.
