ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — People in the Asheville area who did the snow dance were rewarded Friday morning.

Snow that was falling as flurries earlier stepped up its game and quickly became bigger flakes that coated vehicles and roadways.

One Swannanoa resident reported about an inch and a half had fallen by about 8  a.m.

A Waynesville resident said snow had covered the grass but not the roads.

In Alexander, more than an inch had fallen by 9 a.m., a resident there said.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 a.m. Saturday for Avery, Haywood, Madison, Mitchell and counties, the National Weather Service said.

Accumulations mainly of 2 to 3 inches in lower elevations and 4 to 6 inches on ridgetops, with a few isolated ridgetop locations seeing up to 8 inches, are expected in Avery, Madison, Mitchell and Yancey counties. Wind gusts as high as 50 mph are also in the forecast.

In Haywood and Swain counties, expect accumulations mainly of 2 to 4 inches with 4 to 8 inches on the highest ridgetops generally above 5,000 feet. Wind gusts of up to 45 mph are expected.

In the Asheville area, the snow is expected to taper off pretty quickly and the day turn mostly sunny with a high near 43 and winds of 20-23 mph and gusts near 37 mph, according to the National Weather Service.
