NEBO, N.C. (828newsNOW) — If you’re planning to visit Lake James over Memorial Day weekend, you may need to make other plans.

North Carolina State Parks and Recreation is reminding visitors that Lake James State Park’s swim beach and picnic area at Paddy’s Creek access will remain closed through the holiday weekend.

“We are continuing work to mitigate safety hazards from Hurricane Helene debris and hope to reopen the area as soon as possible,” the agency said in a social media post.

A quick check of the park’s website showed those aren’t the only areas still closed because of damage from Helene.

Mill’s Creek Trail and East Wimba Trail are closed because of damage from Tropical Storm Helene. Also, a footbridge is closed for repairs on the southern leg of the Overmountain Victory Trail.

Boat rentals are closed until access is repaired.

Lake James State Park in Burke and McDowell counties includes two access areas to a lake that is perfect for boating, swimming and fishing. There are also campsites at Catawba River and Paddy’s Creek accesses. Some sites are accessible only by paddling.

Please check the park’s website before visiting to get the most up-to-date status of facilities.
