ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The municipal pool at the Dr. Wesley Grant Sr. Southside Community Center will reopen for the Independence Day holiday weekend, following a temporary closure earlier this week prompted by a security incident.
The pool will be open to the public on:
- Friday, July 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Saturday, July 5 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Sunday, July 6 from noon to 6 p.m.
To ensure safety, uniformed security staff will be present throughout the weekend, Asheville officials said. Swimmers are urged to follow all posted rules and lifeguard instructions. “Extreme behavior will not be tolerated,” the city noted in its announcement. “Let’s keep the pool a fun and safe place for everyone.”
GUN-TOTING JUVENILE ARRESTED AT SOUTHSIDE CENTER POOL, NOW CLOSED
The reopening comes after a temporary shutdown of the pool on July 1. According to an Asheville Police Department news release, officers responded to a report of a juvenile with a firearm at the facility around 3:22 p.m. The juvenile was taken into custody, and the weapon was confiscated without injury, police said.
In the wake of the incident, the city closed the pool to all public activities, including swim programs and private events, before announcing its reopening with added security measures.
“We look forward to seeing you at the pool this holiday weekend,” the city said in a statement.
