ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Celebrating their first year in business, locally owned Skyland Cannabis Company is preparing to put on a block party for the whole community.
The block party is scheduled for Oct. 11, featuring workshops, product samples, food vendors and a community roundtable session with Skyland’s own in-house cannabis experts.
So, how did Skyland get to this point?
Co-founder Nicholas Strauss says he felt compelled to forge a new path in the business after years of working in the industry.
“William, my business partner, and I worked for a number of CBD startups and had a lot of experience seeing what worked and didn’t work with regards to running a business in the industry,” Strauss says. “In the end I think it was a mixture of good timing, these new, emergent factors in the market like Delta 9 and THCa, and a chip on our shoulder – a drive to achieve success where our former employers and progenitors had missed the mark – specifically on consumer trust.”

Owning a small business nowadays can be daunting, but Strauss says Skyland has been fortunate to have so much community support over this past year.
“I’m really just incredibly grateful that in 2024 a mom-and-pop style start up small business can achieve what we have achieved,” he reflects. “We have served thousands of locals and even more people from all over the country, and the biggest takeaway for me is that despite what the corporations and internet ecommerce brands may make us believe – that good business and customer care, good prices, an in person approach with hands on knowledge – they would have us believe that it’s all been lost. But it hasn’t, and I feel like with the help of our community we have proved that a special experience while shopping is still possible.”
As a way to celebrate their first year of success, Skyland’s Oct. 11 block party will host a variety of workshops and fun events for the community.
“We’ve got sound healing breathwork, meditation, classic vinyl spinning, vendors selling vintage hippie attire, live art, vendors selling oddities,” Strauss says. “There’s going to be live visuals via laser and projection courtesy of Truffula and VisualSquash. The coolest thing is that the sound is going to be provided by none other than HI – VI Sound System – completely custom built to blast bass culture. We plan on having members of our team as well as vendors and owners of other brands come and speak in the early afternoon to those who are curious about legal hemp.”
