CANTON, N.C. (828newsNOW.COM) — Sponsors still are needed for the “Tee It Up for Diabetes” golf tournament May 29, 2024, at Springdale Resort in Canton.

The event raises funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and also honors the event’s original organizer, the late George Campbell “Cam” Dowdle, a Mountain Credit Union mortgage loan officer who passed away on March 18, 2018.

In a release, Mountain Credit Union explained why it decided to continue the golf tradition in Dowdle’s honor.

“He chose (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) because of the effect diabetes had on his life personally,” the release stated. “Aside from his work for MCU, Cam was dedicated to youth sports in Western North Carolina. He coached basketball and was a radio announcer for local college sports team.”

To date, the event has raised about $60,000 for the foundation, which provides funding for medical research, advocacy and to create a support structure for those with Type 1 diabetes.

According to organizers, lunch and hole-in-one sponsorships have been sold, but many other opportunities remain, including: $100 Silver-level; $250 Gold; $500 Platinum; and $1,000 and up for Diamond level. To join the cause, call Chris Angel, (828) 558-2163.

Angel said player registrations are “dwindling,” but those wanting to inquire about team or individual registrations may call Asher Boyd, (828) 558-2310.
