ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — North Carolina emergency officials are warning residents to prepare for a week of hot, stormy weather as a pattern of daily showers, thunderstorms and high temperatures settles in across the state.
The North Carolina Emergency Management office said Monday that moderate to major heat risks are expected through the week, with daily chances for showers and storms from the mountains to the coast. Isolated strong to severe storms are possible Monday, particularly across the western Piedmont and Foothills, with a continued risk of scattered flash flooding.
The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg said localized flash flooding is most likely in areas already saturated by recent rainfall, while damaging wind gusts may accompany isolated storms, especially in parts of Western North Carolina.
High temperatures Monday were forecast to reach the upper 80s and low 90s, with heat indices making it feel hotter. Daily highs are expected to remain above normal through Monday before briefly easing midweek and rising again by the weekend.
Rain and storm chances are highest during the afternoon and evening hours each day, with the potential for heavy downpours. The NWS forecast includes:
- A 40% chance of storms Monday afternoon and evening
- Up to 80% storm chances Tuesday through Friday
- Overnight lows in the upper 60s, with patchy fog possible on several mornings
Officials urged residents to stay alert and sign up for local emergency alerts, stay hydrated with water or electrolyte drinks and seek air-conditioned spaces such as local libraries to stay cool. More preparedness tips are available at ReadyNC.gov.
