ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Heavy rain is expected toward the end of the week, but just to get everyone used to the idea, Mother Nature is already hitting Western North Carolina with rain, thunderstorms and lots of warnings, watches and advisories.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms will move east across the area this evening into the early overnight hours, according to the National Weather Service. A few of these storms could become severe and produce damaging wind gusts and hail. Brief, heavy rainfall could occur with any storm.

Flood watches followed several severe thunderstorm warnings Tuesday afternoon.

A Flood Watch issued for parts of northeast Georgia, Western North Carolina and Upstate South Carolina will continue through 2 p.m. Friday. Significant flooding in rivers, creeks and low-lying areas is likely, the National Weather Service said. Areas not typically affected may also flood.
