ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — When a child faces behavioral or social challenges, success in the classroom can depend on more than what happens at school. Strong communication between families and teachers can play an essential role.
That’s the idea behind a five-year research project underway at East Tennessee State University. The study examines Teachers and Parents as Partners, or TAPP, an intervention that brings parents and educators together to address a student’s individual needs.
Because the program is delivered through video technology, researchers call it Tele-TAPP.
The project is funded by a $3.8 million grant from the Institute of Education Sciences (grant No. R324A230211).
Study expands its reach
Teachers and parents from school districts in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia have already participated in the study. According to the research team, early results are trending in a positive direction.
Now, researchers are looking to expand participation and are inviting parents and teachers in Western North Carolina to get involved.
The study is seeking parents and teachers of children in Pre-K through sixth grade who have behavioral challenges. Their participation will help researchers determine whether delivering TAPP virtually through Zoom is effective.
The virtual format allows parents, teachers and researchers to connect without needing to be in the same location — an approach that can make participation more accessible to families and educators across rural communities.
What does participation involve?
Tele-TAPP is a 10-week intervention that brings parents and teachers together virtually to focus on the needs of an individual student.
Through the study, researchers are examining whether the TAPP approach can be effectively delivered through video technology while supporting collaboration between families and schools.
Parents and teachers who participate receive stipends of up to $600 for their time.
Participation will also help researchers learn more about using Tele-TAPP to support students and strengthen connections between families and educators in Appalachian communities.
How to get involved in Western North Carolina
