ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Fifty-four year old Andrew Pooser of Asheville ran the fastest time, but the planet was the real winner of the Earth Day 5K on Saturday, April 20, at Carrier Park in Asheville.

There were 129 finishers in the event, which was hosted by the Green Built Alliance to raise funds and awareness about the need to reduce the community’s carbon footprint for the good of the planet.

The top three finishers ran in the same pack for much of the race:

  • #1 Andrew Pooser, 54, of Asheville (bib no. 180), with a chip time of 19:58.2 and gun time of 19:59.8.
  • #2 Matthew McDaniel, 38, of Asheville (no. 113), with a chip time of 20:25.8 and a gun time of 20:26.3.
  • #3 Dominick Laporte, 37, of Black Mountain (no. 182), with a chip time of 21:07.2 and a gun time of 21:07.8.

Among the winners, 75-year-old Connie McGough of Hendersonville, who finished the course in 45:05.6 to take the 70+ women’s category.

Of note, things really did get bananas, as two costumed members of “The Boonanas” team, 14-year-old Teddy Basl of Asheville and Jonathan Landry, 43, of Candler, finished 42nd and 43rd respectively.
