ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A vehicle fire shut down all eastbound lanes of Interstate 40 near Exit 44 (U.S. 23/Smokey Park Highway) in Asheville on Wednesday, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

The crash/fire occurred near mile marker 45 in Buncombe County, with all three lanes currently closed. Officials are warning of significant traffic delays in the area.

Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes. There is no immediate word on injuries or how long the closure will last.

The Asheville Police Department said all traffic was being diverted to Smokey Park Highway.
