ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A Burnsville man was arrested Monday afternoon after fleeing a traffic stop in Asheville, striking two vehicles — including a patrol car — and leading troopers on a brief pursuit, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
The incident began around 4:45 p.m. when a state trooper stopped a vehicle for reckless driving on Patton Avenue, near Hazel Mill Road. Authorities said the driver, identified as 59-year-old Derrick Dwight McFee, exited the vehicle but refused to follow the trooper’s commands.
After a brief verbal exchange, McFee got back into the car and fled the scene, striking a patrol vehicle in the process, officials said.
The pursuit continued through the intersection of Patton Avenue and Hazel Mill Road, where McFee hit a third-party vehicle before continuing to flee.
Troopers eventually stopped McFee by boxing in his vehicle with their patrol cars. No injuries were reported.
McFee was taken into custody and transported to the Buncombe County Detention Center. He faces multiple charges, including:
- Felony flee to elude arrest
- Driving while impaired
- Failure to heed light or siren
- Two counts of misdemeanor hit and run
- Reckless driving
- Resisting a public officer
- Driving while license revoked
- Failure to yield
- Failure to maintain lane control
The incident remains under investigation.
