ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A transformer fire at the Biltmore Estate winery was quickly extinguished Tuesday morning, according to the Asheville Fire Department.
Fire crews were dispatched at about 11:22 a.m. to 195 Dairy Road for a reported working fire. When units arrived at the scene around 11:42 a.m., firefighters found a transformer on fire inside the winery, officials said.
The fire was extinguished using dry chemicals, and crews remained on scene to secure utilities and stop sprinkler flow, according to the department.
Reports circulated on social media indicating the fire occurred in a boiler room and that tourists were evacuated. Fire officials did not confirm those details.
“All I can share is it was a transformer fire that was extinguished soon after our arrival,” said John Harbin, a communications specialist with the Asheville Fire Department.
Emergency medical services evaluated one person at the scene who suffered burns to their hands. The individual was not transported to a hospital, officials said.
No additional injuries were reported. The extent of damage was not immediately clear.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Following the fire, the Biltmore Winery – including the Tasting Room, Shop and Wine Bar – will be closed today, Dec. 30, though the rest of Antler Hill Village remains open to guests.
