ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A truck crash Wednesday morning closed a stretch of U.S. 64 between Highlands and Cashiers, with the roadway expected to remain shut for up to two days.
The crash occurred near Rhody Lane, where a gas truck went through a guardrail and came to rest on a slope below the roadway, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation. The agency is assisting local authorities with traffic control and recovery efforts.
The N.C. State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Officials said weather was not a factor, noting the highway was dry with no snow or ice at the time.
Westbound traffic is blocked near Norton Road, while eastbound traffic is closed beyond the hospital. Residents are allowed to travel in either direction up to the crash site to access driveways but may not pass through the closure. Trucks are required to remain on designated truck routes.
The highway will reopen once the vehicle is recovered and any necessary roadway repairs are completed. Early estimates indicate the road could reopen Friday afternoon.
