ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Two men have been arrested following a fatal shooting in Asheville on Friday, authorities said.

Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded just before 1 p.m. Friday to a report of a gunshot wound at 223 Oak Terrace Road. Upon arrival, they found 44-year-old Jonathan Torres deceased.

Eighteen-year-old Izaiah Quinn Smith-Sheridan of Asheville was arrested Friday and charged with first-degree murder. On Sunday, Cory Robert Mitchell Garrison, 37, also of Asheville, was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and accessory after the fact in connection with the case. No additional suspects are being sought, the sheriff’s office said.

The investigation prompted a law enforcement operation Friday afternoon that temporarily closed parts of Brevard Road in West Asheville. Oak Terrace Road remained closed Friday evening as deputies processed the scene.

BCSO District 2 Captain Chris Stockton praised the multi-agency response.

“This case was brought to a swift and safe resolution by the teamwork of several units from multiple agencies,” Stockton said.

He specifically thanked the Asheville Police Department Drone Team, Henderson County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Unit and multiple Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office units, including patrol deputies, the Sheriff’s Response Team, detectives and crime scene investigators.

“All of these folks worked through an incredibly complex situation for an extended period of time,” Stockton said. “The resolution of this situation results in accountability for those committing gun violence within our community.”
