ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Two teenagers died and two others were seriously injured in a late-night crash Saturday at the Exit 53B off-ramp of Interstate 40 in the Asheville area, authorities said. It was one of two fatal crashes over the weekend in the area.

The crash was reported about 11:31 p.m., after a 2015 Volvo was traveling eastbound on the interstate and attempted to take the Exit 53B off-ramp, according to a synopsis from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

“The vehicle was traveling too fast to safely negotiate the off-ramp and lost control, ran off the left side of the roadway and struck a tree,” the synopsis stated.

Six young people, ages 16 to 19, were in the vehicle. Two rear-seat passengers, Sophie Gordon, 16, of Charlotte, and Robert Fox, 19, of Wilmette, Ill., were killed in the crash, State Highway Patrol reported.

A Facebook posting from Myers Park High School identified Gordon as a junior at the school and indicated that a crisis team would be at the campus on Monday to help students with their emotional needs after losing a classmate. “What is most important is that we care for and support each other,” the posting stated. A school administrator did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment on Monday.

Two other passengers sustained critical injuries, State Highway Patrol reported. Charlotte Catholic High School announced a Sunday evening prayer service at Keffer Stadium through its Facebook page, identifying the injured students as Aby Robinson and Isabella Tarantelli, and saying they were at Mission Hospital in Asheville.

“Please pray and share and pray again!” the invitation stated.

The driver of the vehicle, William Tyson Neumann, 18, of Augusta, Ga., and an additional passenger, Hunter Sanford, 18, of Pineville, N.C., were transported to the hospital with minor injuries, State Highway Patrol reported.

As of Monday morning, no charges had been filed in the crash. The State Highway Patrol Collision Reconstruction Unit was assisting with the investigation.

It was one of two fatal crashes over the weekend  along Interstate 40 in Asheville.

Asheville Police said they were continuing to investigate a collision about 2:33 a.m. Sunday morning on westbound Interstate 40 near mile marker 54.  According to a release, a 2024 Tesla operated by Andrew Dean Justiniano, 26, of Fletcher was traveling the wrong direction, eastbound on Interstate 40 West, when it collided with a 2022 Freightliner semi-tractor trailer that was traveling westbound.

Justiniano died at the scene, while the driver of the Freightliner was uninjured, Asheville Police said.

The highway was closed about 5 1/2 hours while police remained on scene investigating.
