ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) —
The community will lend support to U.S. military veterans and honor the fallen during events leading up to Memorial Day on Monday, May 27, 2024.
The Buncombe County Veteran Stand Down event is a one-stop shop opportunity for veterans to receive multiple services and learn about the community resources available to them.
Services include health screenings, dental assistance, mental health resources, housing/shelter assistance, haircuts, training opportunities and more. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
The event, hosted by the Charles George VA Medical Center and Veterans Services of the Carolinas, is 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, at the Stephens-Lee Recreation Center at 30 George Washington Carver Ave. in Asheville.
Memorial Day
This year’s Memorial Day ceremony will start at 10 a.m. Monday, at the Western North Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, at 962 W Old U.S. Highway 70 in Black Mountain.
The keynote speaker is Lt. Col. (Ret.) Harold (Ted) Minnick, U.S. Army, who was a field artillery battery commander in Vietnam from 1969-70. There will also be a reading from the Veteran writing group, Brothers and Sisters Like These.
The event is sponsored by the Buncombe County Veterans Council, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the State of North Carolina and the city of Asheville.
A recording of the ceremony will be available on the City of Asheville YouTube channel at 3 p.m. that day.

Buncombe County government offices will be closed on Monday, May 27, in observance of Memorial Day.

Register of Deeds
Parks & Recreation – Administrative offices are closed on Monday, May 27. All Buncombe County parks are open regular hours on Monday, May 27. All five Buncombe County outdoor pools are open on Saturday, May 25 through Monday, May 27. Starting on June 11, the pools will be open seven days a week.
Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office – Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office front desk will be closed Monday, May 27. All other operations will be on a normal schedule.

Tax Collections/Property Assessment
Waste Pro – Waste Pro will be closed Monday, May 27 and will operate on a one-day collection delay for the rest of the week. (Monday collection on Tuesday, etc.)
Hendersonville government offices will be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day.
There will be no garbage, recycling or brush collection services provided to city of Hendersonville customers. Collection for Monday customers will be delayed by one week with collections resuming on Monday, June 3, 2024. Any extra bagged garbage will be picked up on June 3.
