ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The city of Asheville will observe Veterans Day next week with an official ceremony at the Charles George VA Medical Center.

The Veterans Day Ceremony will begin at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 11 at the VA hospital. The keynote speaker at the event will be John Mason, a serviceman in the United States Marine Corps, a veteran of the Vietnam War and a Bronze Star and double Purple Heart recipient.

For those who cannot make it to the ceremony in-person, video will be available on the city of Asheville YouTube channel beginning at 3 p.m.

Impacted city services on Veterans Day

  • The city of Asheville offices will be closed on Veterans Day
  • Asheville Rides Transit (ART) bus service will run on a normal schedule. ART service will be free of charge to all veterans.
  • Collection of trash and recycling is on a regular schedule, though the sanitation office will be closed.
  • All community centers and administrative offices are closed. Outdoor features such as playgrounds, picnic areas and sports courts adjacent to community center buildings are open from 6 a.m.-10 p.m.
  • Riverside Cemetery offices are closed, but the grounds are open 7 a.m.-8 p.m.
  • The Harrah’s Cherokee Center – Asheville will be closed on Tuesday, November 11, in honor of Veterans Day, and will reopen for regular business hours on Wednesday.
  • The WNC Nature Center, the Aston Park Tennis Center and the Asheville Municipal Golf & Disc Golf Course will be open for regular operating hours.
  • All public safety services, including police, fire and emergency response, will operate to normal schedule – 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Staff will be available for water related emergencies 24 hours  a day over the holiday. Customers can call the customer service line at 828-251-1122 to report water related emergencies, leaks, breaks and no water calls.
