(828newsNOW) — Authorities have identified a person killed Saturday in a shootout with Henderson County sheriff’s deputies.

Hayden Elias Brook, 29, of Tennessee, died at the scene, the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office said Monday in a release following notification of next of kin.

The case has been turned over to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

According to a release over the weekend, Henderson County sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a person with a gun threatening people at the North Mills River Campground about 6 p.m. Saturday, April 13. The person reportedly fled the area in a van with deputies in pursuit. Deputies said the suspect crashed and then began firing at them. They returned fire.

In a statement Monday, the sheriff’s office said it would not be releasing any other information in order to preserve the integrity of the investigation.

The deputies were placed on administrative leave, as is protocol.

Phone calls and emails to the NCSBI on Monday were not immediately returned.
