ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The Asheville Downtown Association is asking Asheville artists to submit their qualifications to redesign and install a mural on the staircase at 43 Wall St. The project is intended to increase pedestrian traffic and improve quality of life along the city street.
The deadline for submissions is 5 p.m., Tuesday, March 10. Artists can find the application and qualifiers at www.ashevilledowntown.org/news/call-for-artists-wall-street-steps-mural-rfq-now-open.

The mural redesign effort is spearheaded by the Asheville Downtown Association Foundation and the Asheville Downtown Improvement District and supported by grants from the Duke Energy Foundation and ArtsAVL. A community panel appointed by leaders from the ADAF and ADID will review the submissions.
“The panel will prioritize diverse perspectives, technical knowledge, and strong ties to Wall Street and Downtown,” ADA wrote in a press release. “Final selection will follow a transparent rubric and include a public design presentation prior to final approval.”
The organizations hope that the mural project will bring a boost of attention to the Asheville avenue.
“I’m thrilled we can bring this opportunity to Wall Street, and it would not be possible without the tireless advocacy of Wall Street businesses. This mural, together with sustained attention, the presence and stewardship of ADID Ambassadors and ongoing community engagement, is already shifting momentum,” said Erica Waltemade, deputy director of the ADID. “It is a symbolic step toward reenergizing Wall Street to its full potential as one of Downtown Asheville’s most unique and charming public places.”
The current design, “Catawba Falls,” was painted by artist Ian Wilkinson in 2019.
