Afternoon thunderstorms are firing up again across Western North Carolina, and some of them could produce damaging straight-line winds and cloud-to-ground lightning, according to the National Weather Service.

The NWS said the chance of rain in the Asheville area is 70 percent Wednesday and 50 percent Wednesday night.

Wind damage was reported in thunderstorms about 8 miles southeast of Mill Spring in Polk County on Tuesday, the NWS said.

The NWS forecast for the rest of the week:

Thursday: Patchy fog in the morning. Mostly sunny with a chance of showers in the morning, then partly sunny with showers likely with a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. Highs in the lower 80s. West winds 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 70 percent.

Thursday night: Mostly clear. A chance of showers in the evening. Lows in the upper 50s. Northwest winds 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 40 percent.

Friday: Sunny. Highs in the mid 70s. Northwest winds 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.

Friday night: Mostly clear. Lows in the mid 50s.

Saturday: Sunny. Highs in the upper 70s.

Saturday night: Partly cloudy. Lows in the upper 50s.

Sunday: Partly sunny with a 50 percent chance of showers. Highs in the upper 70s.

Sunday night: Mostly cloudy with a 40 percent chance of showers. Lows in the upper 50s.
